Mohib Mirza to play Pakistani taxi driver ‘Vicky’ in Mauritius based feature film Bachaana

Award-winning actor Mohib Mirza is set to hit silver-screens across Pakistan and India as ‘Vicky’ in Nasir Khan’s romantic thriller, Bachaana in a brand new avatar. The character of Vicky is a departure from the actor’s previous work, having garnered significant acclaim for his comedic and action oriented roles in the past.

Mohib Mirza has said:
Media Punch: “Working on an Indo/Pak themed script like Baachana has been an incredible experience. The time has come to translate our small screen successes to the silver screen”.
On the Film: “Bachaana is everything that a pure commercial romantic comedy film is meant to be. It’s got entertaining comedy, nail-biting crises and heart- touching romance for the audience to stay gripped. Topped with the scenic landscape and beautiful beaches of Mauritius, Bachaana delivers a larger-than-life cinematic entertainment that my viewers have eagerly been waiting for.”
On the Role: “The character I play in Bachaana has been the most entertaining one in my career so far. It was beautiful driving through the exotic island. Acting and being shot in such an environment certainly excited me. But apart from all the fun and performance, the role also demanded strenuous prepping. I underwent physical training and practiced sprinting before the shoot started. I worked with the team for weeks together in finalizing the character’s look, hairstyle, accent, gestures, wardrobe and the minutest of details that would give life to it. It was heartening to see the team enjoy my spontaneity and improvisations for the role.”
On the Project: “From its central idea to scripting, dialogues to screenplay, locations to direction and casting to acting; Bachaana was nothing short of being an absolutely grand and immensely professional project. It is very seldom that you see the energy and synchronicity across the team as we all had. Everyone came very well prepared on the set; script was rehearsed, we barely needed prompting and the shoot flew superbly smooth. Despite being shot beyond borders of India and Pakistan in Mauritius, a joint crew from both the countries seamlessly wrapped the project within the exact committed time.”
Bachaana is the first feature film of Nasir Khan as a director, who has gained prominence for his work presented at the Mumbai International Film Festival for his documentary Made in Pakistan. With cast and crew from both Pakistan and India, making acquaintance with each other for the first time on the set, the film has truly captures cross-boundary relations on and off screen. Filmed in Mauritius, the production team conducted the largest talent hunt to find actors in the neutral landscape. With eye-catching scenery, music composed by top Pakistani talent, and a new-take on Indo-Pak relations, the movie is set to cause a stir.
Bachaana is a journey of a sweet and bubbly Indian girl, Aalia, played by Sanam Saeed, who undergoes a series of unfortunate events and is forced to place her faith in a man she hardly knows. That man, Vicky (Mohib Mirza) is a Pakistani driving a taxi in Mauritius. Bachaana follows the couple’s adventurous journey of love.
Produced by Rizwan Saeed, well-known locally and internationally for his technical achievements in film production, Bachaana is one of the most technologically shot films in Pakistan and India.

But Sid and he bonded like long-lost friends after they faced the camera for the first scene,” says a source from the unit adding that Alia even praised Fawad on his performance in his Bollywood debut.’Incidentally, the two play brothers who fancy Alia in the emotional drama. The trio will shoot together during the Mumbai schedule after which the film moves to the scenic hillstation of Conoor in the South where a major chunk of the film will be shot,” the source concluded.

Vanessa Hudgens kept Selena Gomez calm at Met Gala

Close pals Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez held on to each other tight at the Met Gala as the former kept her best friend calm around ex Justin Bieber.
“It helped that Vanessa and Lily (Collins) were there to keep Selena in check. They were like her cheerleaders and just stuck with her the entire night. They weren’t about to let Selena lose her cool with Justin or act too googly eyes with him,” a source was quoted as saying by Hollywoodlife.com.
Reports have revealed that Gomez has initially planned to avoid Bieber completely, but at the crowded event in New York… there was no escaping the Baby hitmaker. Other insiders however, are now claiming the whole thing was a tactic by Gomez.
“Justin played right into her aloofness, which made him want her even more. It was perfect because  this is exactly what she wanted,” another source told Hollywoodlife. “She loved all the compliments from Justin. She felt like she was on cloud nine with all of the attention. She promised herself and her friends that she would play it cool with him, and it worked,” the source added.

Mixing fashion with beauty

KARACHI: It seems that the local fashion fraternity is abreast of the shades that are set to trend this sweltering summer. Acknowledging that a change of hair colour is one of the most refreshing ways you can revamp your look this season, L’Oréal Paris Excellence Crème has teamed up with couturier Nomi Ansari to introduce their Gemstone collection. The colour range, which is the first collaborative effort of the brand’s ‘Ambassador of Fashion’ platform, was showcased at a brunch at Café Verde on May 10.
The collaboration took place earlier this January, with Saba Ansari of Sabs Salon, model Amna Baber and photographer Nadir Feroz Khan among those who were on board with the project.  The television commercial for the campaign features Nomi creating a look on Amna with one of the latest shades.
The collection offers three shades that are inspired by the Andalusite gemstone, according to a press release. Created by mixing cool and warm pigments, the brand has created the shades, golden chestnut brown, golden light brown and chocolate brown, in collaboration with Nomi as part of its efforts to promote Pakistani fashion. “The brand showcases a colour palette with the vision of achieving the perfect hair colour. The collection is tilted towards browns,” Nomi tells The Express Tribune.
Shahzain Hafeez, junior product manager at L’Oréal Paris, claimed, “No other fashion brand or its associates have done this in a while.” On why Nomi was chosen for the collaboration, he said, “Why not him? He is the king of colours and he was the natural fit for this campaign.” According to the press release, Moazzam Ali Khan, general manager of the consumer products’ division at L’Oréal Pakistan, said, “As Nomi is renowned for his use of dynamic colours, he was a natural partner to collaborate with on the new Gemstone collection.”
Amna Babar, who is the face of the campaign, said, “When I did this shoot, I didn’t know it would be such a big success. It was my first shoot with them and I really enjoyed it. I loved the hair colours presented by them. The golden brown shade really suits me.”
The launch was attended by fashion heavyweights, celebrities and media personalities. It also showcased models sporting bespoke designs for the campaign. Speaking about the launch of the Ambassador of Fashion platform, Moazzam stated, “With our association with Nomi, we seek to further enhance the relationship between fashion and beauty.” Nomi added, “This platform is a remarkable way of blending fashion and beauty. We came up with three looks, which are sensual and elegant, to complement the collection.”

People feel modelling isn't a respectable profession: Freiha Altaf

KARACHI: When you talk to her, you realize that Frieha Altaf has seen it all. She started out at a time when the Pakistani fashion industry was still in its infancy, and modelling was not considered a respectable profession for women. In an exclusive interview with The Express Tribune, Frieha talks about her journey in the world of modelling and fashion.
Frieha described how she was introduced to the world of modelling by Saira Irshad of Herald magazine, who first spotted her at an art exhibition at Sheraton in September 1986. She did her first cover forFashion Collection with Asif Reza, and there was no turning back from that point on. Saira’s encouragement prompted Frieha to accept an assignment with model Atiya Khan and photographer Rooha Ghaznavi.
She recalls the restrictions on fashion shows during Zia’s time with a laugh, “You did fashion shows covered up or camouflaged as cultural events. The public and media would be told we were only walking the ramp for charity.”
1986 was a very special year for Frieha. “Mahnaz Rabbani of Gul Ahmed forced me into a fashion show. It was here for the first time I met Tariq Amin, and we became good friends. Then in October, we travelled to the Gulf region with Maheen Khan for the Sharjah Cup.”
She added, “My modelling career started to pick up from that point on. I flew to Hong Kong to star in Junoon’s instrumental video Heer for MTV International, and later did some assignments from Gul Ahmed. I became a muse for Maheen Khan and Sana Safinaz and became Sehyr Saigol’s favourite model. They gave me a chance to work with names such as Rizwan Beyg, Noorjehan Bilgrami and Shameel Ansari.”
She also recalled her relationship with other models. “Simi Shoro, Nina Dubash and Anisa Rashid Khan were all very active at the time. Most of them diversified into other fields. Nabila entered the field as a model, but later she and Tariq Amin began experimenting with hair-styling and make-up. I kept myself exclusively to modelling, only moving to PTV dramas and plays after I had become a successful model.”
Frieha also told The Express Tribune about her acting stints. “I played Khurr for a Haseena Moin play. It was interesting, but I didn’t care much for being paired up with Shakeel. Later, I did Rosie which is still remembered very fondly, and that was the start of a great friendship with Moin Akhtar.”
The former model was very candid about the stigmas attached to the field. “There has always been a feeling that modelling is not for ‘respectable’ girls. I was the first model for Sunsilk in Pakistan, but my face was not shown clearly on the billboards. People used to have a sick mentality. Girls were asked to avoid the field to protect their reputation and ‘because you have to get married’.”
She confessed she too was a victim of this mentality. “I got engaged in 1988 and was forbidden to model, so I had to give it up. Giving up on my dream wasn’t easy but I did it for the sake of my family. My marriage only lasted ten months, and I re-entered the field not long after. I had no choice – I had to earn a living!”
In 1993, Frieha quit modelling and started Cats agency in 1993 with Aliya Zaidi and Rehan Ali Khan, through which she has successfully launched as many as 80 models through its contacts in advertising agencies. “I launched Iffat Omar and Kiran (Tahira Syed’s daughter) in Lahore and Seemi Pasha and Sadaf Malaterre in Karachi, as well as Vinny and ZQ. HSY tried his hand at modeling but I told him, please do something else, and then later he decided to become a designer.”
She added, “The best part of it was I was roaming around Pakistan, I used to pick and choose girls and boys for modeling campaigns. I would visit photoshoots, to Pasni, Kalash and Moen jo Daro and Thar, and now it all happens in a studio.”
She explained that things changed in 2002, when she decided to be more pro-active. “Previously, advertising agencies would contact me for models. But I realized that I needed to launch some new models on my own. Natasha Hussain was the first, and Khawar Riaz brought me Nomi Qamar and Farooq Manan. Athar Shahzad introduced me to Imaan Ali. Times have changed.”
In 2007, Frieha partnered with Veet for the Veet Model Hunt which helped to further propel the modelling industry. This partnership has helped to launch models such as Neha, Saima Azhar and Areeba Habib. Frieha remains committed to her quest to bring more “tall beautiful girls in this field”.

However, a major plot twist given away in the trailer shows how during training she is suspected of masterminding one of the biggest attacks on New York city after 9/11.

Google’s self-driving cars involved in 11 accidents

ZURICH: Internet search company Google Inc’s self-driving cars have been involved in 11 accidents, but have not been the cause of any, over the last six years since the project began, the program’s director said on Monday.
A team of drivers that is testing the fleet of more than 20 vehicles have driven 1.7 million miles so far.
“…Not once was the self-driving car the cause of the accident,” Chris Urmson said in a post on technology news website Backchannel’s blog Medium. (bit.ly/1GZciuW) No one was injured in the accidents, Urmson added.
“If you spend enough time on the road, accidents will happen whether you’re in a car or a self-driving car.”
The cars had been hit from behind seven times, mainly at traffic lights, with a majority of the accidents being on city streets rather than on freeways.
“We’ll continue to drive thousands of miles so we can all better understand the all-too common incidents that cause many of us to dislike day-to-day driving  –  and we’ll continue to work hard on developing a self-driving car that can shoulder this burden for us,” Urmson said.

50 cent blamed for stealing jewellery worth $250,000

Rapper 50 Cent and his entourage have been accused of stealing a Rolex and neck chain worth $250,000 from a jeweler during the Mayweather v Pacquiao fight weekend in Vegas.
Robert Marin, owner of LAX Jewelry which specializes in diamond-studded bling worn by rappers, says he was in Vegas in order to sell the watch and chain to 50 Cent – real name Curtis Jackson.
Mr Marin says he partied with Jackson before being invited to look at Floyd Mayweather’s gym, where he says he was pistol-whipped by two of Jackson’s security and the items were taken.
According to TMZ, Mr Marin claims to have met with Jackson at Drai’s nightclub in The Cromwell hotel on Friday night, after the rapper had performed there.
The jeweler says he partied with Jackson and his people into the early hours of Saturday morning, before he was invited to see Floyd Mayweather’s private gym ahead of the fight that night.
